Google Input Tools (IME) are input Method Editor which helps writing text in regional or any other supported language. It includes transliteration, IME, and on-screen keyboards. This article explains How to install and use the Google IME chrome extension and also how to try it online before using.

Try Google Input Tools online
Do you want to see how Google IME works and how to use before installing?
Just open Try Google Input Tools. You can choose any supported language. Let’s choose native script as Marathi. You can choose Hindi, Tamil or any other language. Select the Marathi language from the drop-down. There are 4 options in the drop-down.
Method 1 – Choose option 1 which show म letter in Devanagari script.
Now, let’s write “How are you?”.
This is the way I will write it in a Phonetic form “Tu Kasa aahes ?”. IME converts it in native format as shown below. It also shows suggestions for words as a popup. You can choose the actual word from the popup.

Google Language Input Tools Download
This is an interesting method. It opens a separate popup at the bottom of the screen. You draw the word and hit either Enter Key or Button given in editor to move the character in the main editor. It also shows suggestion which you can select to move it to the main area.
Google Input Tools Chrome Extension
This tool is also available as Chrome Extension. You need to download and install the Google Input Tools chrome extension.
Open Google IME Chrome Extension page and just click on Add to Chrome button. It opens up a popup. Click on Add Extension.
Setup Chrome Extension
It creates a small icon post installation in chrome browser. Click on the icon to open the popup. The popup has 2 options extension options and keyboard shortcut settings.
Extension Options
Click on this option to open a window which allows you to select the native language. Select the language option on the right-hand side and click on the arrow button to move it to the left-hand side. After selection close the window.

This option allows you to set up a key or combination of the key to controlling Google IME chrome extension. Click on it to open a window to configure keyboard shortcuts.
- Activate the extension – Setup your own key combination
- Select next Input Tool – Alt + Shift + N
- Revert last Input Tool – Alt + Shift + R
- Toggle current Input Tool – Setup your own key combination
You can also select if the shortcut to work in Chrome Browser or Globally.
Download and Install Google IME
Download GOOGLE IME and follow below steps to install it.
Choose language and accept TOS and click on Download.
Click on the downloaded .exe file. This is not the offline installer. You need to connect internet as it downloads in real time as shown.
It shows installation complete message when done.
